Shuffle Songs

November 14, 2004

According to Apple, “Shuffle Songs” is the most-used feature on the iPod. It is very rudimentary and picks the next random track from the 1,200 songs on my iPod without any discernible pattern or the slightest sign of intelligence.
I have spent a lot of time with my iPod. Most of it with “Shuffle Songs”. I noticed that the iPod pays no attention whatsoever to what I actually feel like hearing. A bit of sensitivity would be nice.
Yet an algorithm that can estimate what I want to hear next wouldn't be hard to implement.
To pick the next track, the algo would only have three of my possible behaviors to go on.

- I skipped the last track manually,
- listened to it all the way through,
- or repeated it

Based on this behavior, the choice of the next “random” track can be narrowed down – to get close to what I want to hear next. The next track is given a rating. Do the available tracks have the same artist, come from the same album or belong to the same genre as the last track? If one of these questions is answered with yes for a track, it is rated (with points) according to my behavior.
Illustrated as a table, it would look like this.

skipped complete repeated
Genre -1 2 1
Album -1 1 2
Artist -3 0 3

An example. I'm currently listening to Eminem - Lose Yourself from the album 8Mile. Genre: Rap.
Depending on whether I skip this track, listen to it in full or play it again, the next track is chosen according to the table shown above. To keep things manageable, I've limited my “playlist” to six songs.

Skipped:

Artist Album Genre Points Title
Eminem (-3) 8Mile (-1) Rap (-1) -5 Run Rabbit Run
50 Cent (0) 8Mile (-1) Rap (-1) -2 Places To Go
Shaggy (0) Lucky Day (0) Rap (-1) 0 Get My Party On
The Doors (0) L.A. (0) Rock (0) 0 Been Down So Long
B.E.P. (0) Elephunk (0) Funk (0) 0 Hey Mama

The next track will most likely be Black Eyed Peas - Hey Mama or Been Down So Long by The Doors.

Listened to in full:

Artist Album Genre Points Title
Eminem (0) 8Mile (1) Rap (2) 3 Run Rabbit Run
50 Cent (0) 8Mile (1) Rap (2) 3 Places To Go
Shaggy (0) Lucky Day (0) Rap (2) 2 Get My Party On
The Doors (0) L.A. (0) Rock (0) 0 Been Down So Long
B.E.P. (0) Elephunk (0) Funk (0) 0 Hey Mama

The next track will most likely be by Eminem or 50Cent again.

Repeated:

Artist Album Genre Points Title
Eminem (3) 8Mile (2) Rap (3) 8 Run Rabbit Run
50 Cent (0) 8Mile (2) Rap (3) 5 Places To Go
Shaggy (0) Lucky Day (0) Rap (3) 3 Get My Party On
The Doors (0) L.A. (0) Rock (0) 0 Been Down So Long
B.E.P. (0) Elephunk (0) Funk (0) 0 Hey Mama

Quite obviously I like Eminem a lot, which is why another Eminem track will, almost certainly, be my next one.

Of course it would be interesting to take the whole thing further by basing it not just on my behavior for the last track but for the last five or ten. And/or by adding another behavior – “listened to for more than 30 seconds”.

Also Gere, Tempo und Inhalt.
